Slooowwwww

If there where to be a list of the worlds coolest animals, snails would most definitely be left off.  Actually, I bet if there where any top ten lists made about animals a snail would not be included.  They just aren't even thought about enough to come up in conversation.  The whole entire idea of them gets them no respect, it doesn't even matter what kind of snail they are, they are all blatantly classified under the label "snail."  The only sort of fame snails have ever achieved was a supporting role in SpongeBob.  Despite all of this lack of social recognition, snails can actually do what many of us dream of doing, sleep for years at a time.

It is a fact that many species of snails are capable of sleeping for three to four years at one time.  Considering that most species only live for around fifteen to twenty years, this is incredible.  It is quite possible that a snail could literally spend over ninety percent of its life asleep.  The reason that such long naps are taken is because there are many places in the world where the conditions are less than ideal for long periods of time, so a snail deals with this by simply sleeping through them.  Scientists say that this is to preserve water and vital nutrients that are not in abundance.  Although this is most likely true, I would like to think that snails have really good dreams.  Who knows what sort of crazy things go on in their heads, it could be anything.  Also, could you imagine what it would be like to wake up after four years of sleep, imagine how different the world would be.  There could be an entirely different landscape around you, a whole new home.  When you closed your eyes you where fast asleep in field and then when you wake up you are in a small square patch of wood that is left in the middle of a strip centre.  It would be truly fantastic, like going to a new level in a video game.  Running around eating leaves and stuff until they are all gone, then you go to sleep and wake up in the next level.  Snails are cool

  1. This is AMAZING information. Although, I must tell you something very sad. Lots of snails decide to sleep on my front walk, and I cringe as I accidentally crush the babies all of the time. I feel even more awful about it after reading this.
